Painting is an act of faith for me. When I pick up a brush, I step into a space where my thoughts, dreams, memories, and emotions intertwine. My art is both a reflection and a release, a way to process what I have experienced inside and see in the world around me. I hope that when others look at my work, they’ll find their own stories within it- perhaps a connection to something shared, something human.
Over the years, my paintings have evolved into a world of their own broadly inspired by nature, my deep sensitivities to the world around me- perhaps even touching on the symbolic and spiritual. Animals (lately birds & fish) as well as floral motifs often make their way into my work, blending abstraction with forms that feel familiar yet dreamlike. Movement is an important aspect my process. I'm super physical with my painting: I sling, splash, and spin paint, scratching and smearing materials while adding to the many layers of mark making. It’s messy and my whole mind-body is involved resulting in often times than not, a cathartic process. Each movement on the surface holds a piece of where I’ve been, where I am and perhaps where I hope.
Symbolism is at the core of my art, even when I’m not consciously planning it out. I am always in dailogue with whatever it is I am painting even if it's in silence, I am responding. I’ve learned to trust the layers as they build, allowing the painting to guide me along as a collaborative process between the known and unknown. The unknown is scary sometimes, I think painting through that helps me to see the other side of it and that I can work through that difficult terrain. I also work intuitively which often brings an exciting sense of discovery which for me is what makes painting worthwhile. It is an exploration into the unexpected realms of what lives within me, outside of me and in spaces that I have not seen. I often experiment with various materials via water based and oil based paints, pastels, charcoal, inks, pressed leaves/flowers, feathers, decorative and handmaid papers. There’s a kind of magic in those moments when the materials alchemize- seemingly to speak their own poetic language in texture and resonance.
For me, painting is about discovering the beauty of who I am as a human experiencing this difficult and beautiful world and the connection between this earth we steward and the spiritual world that cannot (yet) be seen, but for me is often sensed and felt at times. It’s an invitation to myself and for others to have the faith to bide within the mystery or meaning that's found within my paintings that reflect this complex life we are all trying to navigate through.
